Our ‘Tales of the Tombstone Lion’ has been printed!

‘Tales of the Tombstone Lion’, a guide to the Jewish cemetery (and the basics of Judaism) by Jakub Antosz-Rekucki, published by our Sztetl Mszana Dolna Foundation with funding from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, has been printed!

The book is mainly aimed at young readers, but, as Dr Patrycja Dołowy writes in her review, older readers can also benefit from it. Similarly, although the lion guides readers around the necropolis in Mszana Dolna, the book contains information about Jewish cemeteries in general: rules of conduct, ways of commemorating the dead, types of gravestones, and explains the basics of the complexity of inscriptions and gravestone symbolism. It also discusses the Sabbath and other Jewish traditions. And all this in a somewhat fairy-tale-like detective story setting!

The promotion of the publication will take place on 20 October 2025 at 5 p.m. at the Municipal Library in Mszana Dolna, as part of the summary of the 4th edition of our Foundation's project ‘A story about the Jewish cemetery in Mszana Dolna. 2025 edition’.

The illustrations for the book were created by watercolourist Magda Komenza-Regnard.

Co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage as part of the National Heritage Institute's programme ‘Together for Heritage’.
