Meeting with Jewish culture: paper cutting

On May 25th, 2022, a lecture and Jewish paper cutting workshops took place in the hospitable surroundings of the Mszana Dolna Municipal Library. The workshops were carried out by Ms. Anna Wencel from the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow. It was the fourth event within the framework of our project "The story of prewar, bicultural Mszana Dolna". Paper cutting is known in many cultures, including our own, Polish: Kurpiowska, Łowicka, Kaszubska. Jewish paper cutting differs from others mainly because of the strong connection with religion. In many Jewish houses there were elaborate cut-outs, decorating walls, windows and prayer books. Especially for some holidays, such as Shavuot, they were decorated in this way. There were also cut-outs for weddings and as a kind of amulets to protect the newborn and the midwife. This cultural richness was lost with the Holocaust, which is why it is so important to bring it back, to learn about it, and to mourn. Twenty-seven people from various generations took part in the classes. We are especially pleased that young people took part in them in large numbers! We would like to thank Ms. Agnieszka Orzeł, the Director of the Municipal Library and the Senior Citizens Club for their hospitality and Ms. Anna Pękala, the Mayor, for the honorary patronage.

The project realized with the financial support of Malopolska Region
