Shavuot-Pentecost. Educational meeting in the library

On 26.05.2023, in the Municipal Library in Mszana Dolna, a meeting around Shavuot - Pentecost, prepared by us, took place. It was the first event of this year's second edition of our educational project 'The Story of the Bicultural, Pre-War Mszana Dolna'. We introduced the residents of Mszana town, visitors and participants in the online broadcast, to the ongoing Feast of Weeks (the word 'shavuot' means: weeks) in Judaism, celebrated to commemorate the giving of the Torah to the chosen people, at Mount Sinai. This happened 7 weeks and 1 day after the Exodus from Egypt, hence another name for the festival: Pentecost. The feast is uniquely linked between Christianity and Judaism because it was during this feast that the Pentecost described in the Acts of the Apostles took place. We presented the origins and customs of Shavuot, discussed the events of the biblical Book of Ruth, which is read during the feast, and the related traditions of shavuosim, or cut-outs placed in windows, and yerek, the decorating of synagogues and houses with green branches; hence another name: Pentecost. We learned about Shavuot food - also in the literal sense, as we prepared both bread with grains, cakes with cheese and milk filling, cheese, honey, fruit and.......challah in the shape of a Torah scroll, because Shavuot, the festival of the giving of the Torah, fell on the Sabbath. We shared this challah at the end of the meeting, during pleasant conversations and stories about future plans.
Thank you all for your attendance, also online. As a reminder, you can watch the whole thing on our FB profile, and soon also on the channel https://www.youtube.com/@sztetlmszanadolna  where you can find a video recording of all the meetings of last year's project.
We would like to thank the City Library, which once again became a partner of the project. It was held under the honorary patronage of the Mayor of Mszana Dolna, Anna Pękała. The city authorities were represented at the meeting by the Vice-Mayor, Mr Michał Grzeszczuk, and we are grateful for their presence and kind words.
The next meeting is already on 9.06.2023. - We would also like to invite the younger audience to it, especially history enthusiasts. The Mszana Library will host the mysterious Fishka, a Mszana-born (!) detective who tracks down riddles related to the history of art in Poland. You are cordially invited! Recipes for our dishes, which many people have asked for, will be posted separately 😋.
