November Days of Remembrance

November 1 and 2 are the days of remembrance for the dead in Poland. Jewish tradition does not know a separate Day of the Dead - they are remembered on yorcayt, or anniversaries of death, or on the occasion of other holidays. However, we, visiting the graves of relatives and friends, wanted to honor the memory of our Jewish fellow citizens as well: both those who died a natural death before the terrible time of the Holocaust, and its Victims. There are 3 resting places for Jews in Mszana Dolna: the Jewish cemetery on Zakopiańska Street, the mass grave of the Victims of the 19.08.1942 execution on Pansky Street and a smaller one from late April and early May 1942 on Ogrodowa Street. We visited all of these cemeteries, lit the lights of remembrance, recited psalms and Kaddish fragments, and remembered those who once lived, died and perished here. May their souls be tied in a knot of eternal life!
